Aluminum Free Deodorant | Natural Deodorant
Have you ever broken down the word antiperspirant? By definition, anti means ‘against’ and perspirant, or perspire, means ‘to give out sweat through the pores of the skin.’ This means that deodorant products labeled as antiperspirants are fighting against your body’s sweating process and, in fact, are quite literally blocking it from occurring.
Exactly how are these products stopping my sweat in its tracks, you may ask? One of the primary active ingredients in most commercial antiperspirants is aluminum, or more specifically, aluminum salts. These salts work to block the sweat ducts and reduce the amount of sweat that reaches the skin’s surface. Even though the sweat is blocked from leaving the pores, it still continues to be produced under the skin, which can potentially lead to blocked hair follicles and cysts through consistent use.
While there is no definitive research linking the use of aluminum salts to harmful diseases, it just doesn’t make sense that we’d block this natural bodily function, which makes us wonder why people started to in the first place. Somewhere along the line, someone in society decided to spread the myth that sweating is gross and should be prevented, so the world figured out a way to block this from happening (enter aluminum salts and antiperspirants).
BUT, in reality, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. Sweat is normal. Sweat is natural. Sweat is necessary. It’s a process our bodies need to stay regulated and healthy. Check out our sweat-covered blog to see for yourself!
How are we at Sam’s going aluminum-free to naturally give you a deodorant that’s effective at both combating odor and absorbing moisture, all while still allowing the sweat process to occur? With a powerful formula made from top-of-the-line natural ingredients that treat your skin the way it should be treated.
How we kick odor to the curb
Our secret ingredient for natural odor busting? Baking soda! As part of our formula base, baking soda works to beat the BO through its antibacterial properties. Interestingly enough, it’s not your sweat that stinks, it’s the reaction between your sweat and the bacteria in your underarms that gives off the odor.
How does baking soda work to prevent this bacterial reaction from occurring? Simply put, your skin and sweat have natural pH values that are generally lower than baking soda, meaning your skin and sweat are more acidic and baking soda is more alkaline. By applying an alkaline baking soda deodorant to your acidic pits, you are creating a more alkaline underarm environment that no longer supports the bacterial reaction, and in turn greatly reduces odor or eliminates it all together. We love how baking soda can do this while still allowing you to sweat normally and naturally.
How we tackle sweat
Feeling sweaty? No sweat (okay, yes sweat, but like we said, sweating is good)! Sure, our deodorant doesn’t stop you from sweating altogether because that’s not our goal, but it does help to absorb some of your excess underarm moisture through another base ingredient, arrowroot powder. Arrowroot powder is a starch obtained from the rootstock of several tropical plants and when used on the skin, it penetrates and softens the upper layers which enables a higher rate of absorption, getting rid of most unwanted wetness and oils. Here’s to sweating and staying protected and dry!
How we keep things smooth
No one wants dry or itchy pits, right? Not only do we want our deodorant to effectively take down odor and wetness, but we want it to keep your skin healthy too! Coconut oil and shea butter are two more key ingredients in our base formula and serve as excellent moisturizers to prevent your underarm skin from drying out as the arrowroot powder works its magic, leaving them feeling soft and smooth.
If there’s one thing we’ve learned from using our natural deodorants packed with awesome ingredients, it’s that aluminum-free is always the answer when it comes to day-long safe and healthy pit protection. Sweating is cool (as in it helps to keep your body temperature from getting too hot) and swiping on a deodorant that allows you to do so without the added smell and excess moisture is your daily key to confidence and success.
